It is time again for the crayfish premiere in Sweden! KRAFTPREMIAR! Crayfish are on sale all year but people in Sweden never abandon this seasonal tradition (early August). This is when people have crayfish parties! The media set the scene for the feast with detailed tests of crayfish, beer and schnapps. The media also rank the various brands. The most popular crayfish come from Sweden but they tend to be very expensive. That is why many people buy crayfish from Turkey, China and the USA. They are very good too. Crayfish are to be eaten outdoors (preferrably). It is also common for people to hang colorful paper lanterns over the table (or in trees). The most popular type of lantern shows a smiling full moon. Both the tablecloth and the colourful plates are also supposed to be of paper. People wear bibs around their necks and comic paper hats on their heads. Then the feast begins. You eat crayfish cold. With your fingers. Most eating behaviors ar acceptable! Bread and a strong cheese are eaten on the side. People mostly drink beer and the inevitable schnapps. People prepare crayfish in a brine with plenty of crown dill! Carson had crayfish with me, mom and dad when he visited Sweden in 2003. He liked it but I could tell he did not know what to expect. He had some Aquavit and ate away!

Sounds fun (and tasty!). I remember Jacque telling me that when she lived in Louisina during her childhood that they had outdoor crawfish feasts where they just dumped them out and people just ate them with their fingers, so it sounds a bit similar to what you do in Sweden. : )
