Hello everyone and welcome to my blog! I live far away from some of you (I miss you!) and it can be difficult to stay in touch at times. This blog is my attempt to keep you up-to-date with my life here in Oklahoma.

EASTER IN SWEDEN
You decorate with Easter bunnies here in the States! In Sweden we decorate a bit differently! Sweden (like other nations in the world) celebrates Easter as a religious holiday. However, there are some Easter superstitions attached to Easter that are far from Bible based. Witches and their spells are part of folklore in Sweden. Easter week starts with Palm Sunday (commemorating Christ's entry into Jerusalem). Palm trees do not exist in Sweden so many churches use budding varieties of willow trees. People bring some of the branches into their homes. Sometimes they decorate these branches with Easter eggs and feathers.
There is one superstition that got started in Sweden on Easter and it has nothing to do with a bunny or an Easter egg. A long time ago some people believed that witches were especially active and their black magic especially powerful during Easter week. On Maundy Thursday (today) they were thought to fly off on brooms and consort with the devil. While much of the superstition is old and no longer a part of annual customs it has left a legacy in modern times. On Maunday Thursday or Easter Eve Swedish girls and boys dress up as Easter hags (women who practice black magic are called hags) and pay visits to their neighbors.
Some leave a small decorated card (a so called "Easter letter") with candy in it. I did not know this but apparently the custom of making "Easter letters" is especially widespread in Western Sweden. You can also slip the letter into a person's mailbox without being seen. The letter itself is usually a colorful drawing and folded it into a special way ( in the shape of a triangle).
